MANILA, Philippines – Members of the Senate majority bloc again did not attend the scheduled plenary session on Tuesday, June 2, leaving only minority senators inside the session hall.
Instead of showing up at the plenary, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano went live on Facebook, saying the majority was using its absence as a “parliamentary tool” to maintain control of key committees and to protest what he called a “puppet Senate.”
Without a quorum, the Senate was once again unable to conduct business, leaving several measures in limbo.
The minority bloc also called for Cayetano’s resignation, accusing him of abandoning his duties as Senate president by failing to preside over two consecutive sessions.
