MANILA, Philippines – Former public works secretary Manuel Bonoan surrendered to authorities on Monday, June 1, after the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan issued an arrest warrant in connection with his plunder and graft cases.
But Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Bonoan was immediately brought to the Philippine National Police General Hospital due to hypertension.
“His stroke was imminent,” Remulla also said.
“He will be kept there for an (indefinite) amount of time before he stabilizes, and when the doctor says he is fit to stand trial, he will be brought to the Sandiganbayan,” Remulla added.
Bonoan is among the five latest personalities, including Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who were ordered detained over a non-bailable offense due to their alleged role in the flood control corruption scandal.
Bonoan was already issued an arrest warrant over a count of graft on Friday, May 29, but was able to post bail.
The filing against Estrada and Bonoan came weeks after the Office of the Ombudsman confirmed that it received the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recommendation to file cases against the two. – Rappler.com
