Fans of the metal band Megadeth are preparing themselves for both a very exciting new chapter for the group as well as a sad farewell. The thrash outfit is scheduled to release its upcoming seventeenth full-length, a self-titled affair, in January, and while that is usually good news, it will also mark the final full-length from the rockers.
This Friday (November 14), Megadeth’s new single “I Don’t Care” becomes an immediate bestseller in America, and its immediate performance on iTunes shows just how beloved the act is, decades on – and demonstrates that there is incredible anticipation for the forthcoming project.
Megadeth’s “I Don’t Care” Debuts at No. 1
“I Don’t Care” sits at No. 1 on the iTunes Top Songs chart at the time of writing. Megadeth’s performance is impressive, especially since the band faced competition from some of the most successful songs of the year and a handful of exciting new releases.
Friday marks the beginning of a new tracking frame in the global music industry. It is when most musicians drop brand new tunes and projects, as then they will have a complete seven days in which to rack up streams and sales. Most musicians who are hoping to make an impact on charts globally deliver music on Friday, and this time around, Megadeth is the champion.
Megadeth Beats Alex Warren and KPop Demon Hunters
“I Don’t Care” outpaces the No. 1 song in America, “The Fate of Ophelia” by Taylor Swift. That tune currently resides in the runner-up spot on the iTunes Top Songs tally – though it leads the Hot 100 for a fifth consecutive turn – which ranks the bestselling cuts on the platform throughout the United States. Also present inside the top ten are “Ordinary” by Alex Warren and “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, which have spent even more time ruling the Hot 100 than Swift’s current focus.
A handful of new tunes by stars like Louis Tomlinson of One Direction fame, Prince and The Revolution, Depeche Mode, Charli XCX, and Jamie MacDonald all launch within the top 40, becoming fast bestsellers.
“I Don’t Care” Follows Megadeth’s “Tipping Point”
“I Don’t Care” serves as the second song released from the Megadeth album and the second official single. In early October, the band unleashed “Tipping Point.” The cut, which also sold well upon its release, reached No. 18 on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, where “I Don’t Care” may debut in a little more than a week.
Megadeth’s History on the Billboard Charts Throughout Four Decades
Megadeth has been a fixture in the harder side of rock music for more than 40 years. The group released its debut album Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! in the spring of 1985. Since then, each and every full-length the rockers have delivered has landed on the Billboard 200, and the outfit has reached the top 10 with eight projects.
Megadeth has climbed as high as No. 2 back in 1992 with Countdown to Extinction, while The Sick, The Dying… and the Dead! — the group’s most recent project — hit No. 3 back in 2022.
Megadeth’s Upcoming Half-Decade-Long Final Tour
In addition to one final album, Megadeth is slated to head back out on the road for a farewell trek, which the band has dubbed the This Was Our Life Tour. In a recent interview with Kerrang! magazine, rock superstar and Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine stated that while the venture is a goodbye, it is one that is sure to take a long time. “We are easily talking about touring for another three to five years,” the musician stated, so fans should have time to catch the act at least once more before the moniker is retired.
