Ondo (ONDO) Tokenomics

Ondo Finance (ONDO) is a decentralized finance protocol focused on bringing institutional-grade financial products, such as tokenized U.S. Treasuries, onchain. The ONDO token serves as the primary governance mechanism for the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance.

Issuance Mechanism

ONDO is an ERC-20 token deployed on the Ethereum network with a fixed maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens.

• Inflation Policy: There is no scheduled or planned inflation for the ONDO token.
• Minting Constraints: While a mint function exists within the smart contract, it is restricted. The function can only be called by an address with the MINTER_ROLE, and it cannot be executed if the total supply exceeds the 10 billion token cap.
• Security: Transactions are secured by Ethereum’s consensus. The contract includes an enableTransfer function, which was activated on January 18, 2024, to allow public trading.

Allocation Mechanism

The token distribution was designed to align various stakeholders, including the community, investors, and core contributors.

• Ecosystem Growth: Reserved for future distributions, including potential airdrops and rewards for developers, educators, and strategic contributors.
• Protocol Development: Allocated to core contributors focused on building infrastructure and products.
• Private Sales: Distributed across Seed and Series A rounds to early institutional backers.
• Community Access Sale: Conducted via CoinList in May 2022, raising over $10 million.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The ONDO token is primarily utilized for decentralized governance and ecosystem participation.

• Governance: Tokenholders govern Flux Finance and the Ondo DAO. They can vote on interest rate models, collateral parameters, and the management of the DAO treasury. To submit a proposal, a user must have at least 100 million ONDO delegated to them.
• Ondo Points Program: A multi-wave incentive program where users earn points for onchain activities. Points are currently awarded for holding ONDO, participating in governance, lending on Flux Finance, and holding RWA tokens like USDY or OUSG.
• Ondo Bridge: A "burn and mint" mechanism that allows ONDO and other native assets (like USDY) to be transferred across supported chains (Ethereum, Mantle, Solana, etc.) without the risks associated with traditional "lock and mint" wrapped tokens.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanisms

Until January 2024, ONDO tokens were subject to a "Global Lock-Up." Following a DAO proposal (FIP-08), the lock-up was lifted for the public launch. However, significant portions of the supply remain subject to structured vesting schedules.

Unlocking Schedule and Timeframes

• Investor and Development Vesting: For private sale participants and protocol development, the one-year cliff ended on January 18, 2025, followed by three years of yearly vesting installments.
• Governance Rights: Notably, tokens that are still locked are permitted to participate in DAO governance voting, allowing all stakeholders to shape the protocol's future during their vesting periods.
