- Block Time: The network targets a block interval of 2.5 minutes, which is four times faster than Bitcoin's 10-minute target.
- Difficulty Adjustment: The mining difficulty recalibrates approximately every 2,016 blocks (roughly every 3.5 days) to maintain the consistent 2.5-minute block production rate.
As of June 7, 2024, approximately 74.61 million LTC (roughly 88.83% of the maximum supply) were in circulation. The issuance of new coins is expected to continue until approximately the year 2142, at which point the block reward will reach zero.
Allocation Mechanism
Unlike many modern blockchain projects, Litecoin did not have an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) or a pre-mine for founders and investors.
- Fair Launch: The network was launched as an open-source project where the first block (Genesis Block) was created by Charlie Lee, but the vast majority of the supply is distributed to the public through mining.
- Mining Distribution: Tokens are allocated to miners as a reward for providing computational power (using the Scrypt hashing algorithm) to secure the network.
- Secondary Markets: Users typically acquire LTC by purchasing it on centralized or decentralized exchanges or by receiving it as payment for goods and services.
Usage and Incentive Mechanism
The LTC token serves several primary functions within its ecosystem:
- Medium of Exchange: LTC is used for peer-to-peer payments, enabling users to send and receive value without intermediaries.
- Store of Value: Due to its hard cap and deflationary halving mechanism, it is often used as a digital store of value.
- Transaction Fees: Users pay fees in LTC to have their transactions processed. These fees incentivize miners to include transactions in blocks and compensate them for the electricity and hardware costs required to secure the network.
- Miner Incentives: Miners are incentivized through a combination of newly minted LTC (inflationary block rewards) and the transaction fees collected from the blocks they mine.
Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time
Litecoin does not have a native staking, liquidity provision, or formal token-weighted governance locking mechanism.
- No Staking: Because Litecoin is a Proof-of-Work network, there is no requirement for users to "lock" or "stake" tokens to participate in consensus or earn rewards.
- Instant Liquidity: Tokens held in private wallets or on exchanges are generally liquid and do not have protocol-enforced "unlocking times" or vesting schedules, as the tokens were not distributed through private sales or team allocations with such constraints.
- Governance: Litecoin's governance is informal. Changes are proposed via Litecoin Improvement Proposals (LIPs) and ratified when a majority of miners and node operators adopt the new software. There is no mechanism to lock tokens for voting power.
